This is fun Chris. I like the idea of the glass boat visiting different eras. An octopus would make an excellent computer!! It's all brain and arms . . .

Cheers Aisling- that is indeed one of the (submerged) references of the story. It was meant to be a sort of general history of computing, prompted by a dream. And yes, since they began reporting how smart octopuses are, extricating themselves from glass boxes etc, I always felt terrible about how good they taste!
