As usual, I had no idea. A fascinating portal into a connection between the Roman & Orthodox worlds.

Thanks Chris. I read the Borges story many moons ago. Time to read it again!

Very interesting story Chris. I like the comparison with Borges - sounds apt indeed. I had never heard of Bessarion so thanks for enlightening me!

cheers, Aisling! Glad you enjoyed it. There are several Borges stories that I believe the philological imagination made possible, but this particular metafiction sprang to mind first: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pierre_Menard,_Author_of_the_Quixote

Great review. I was going to get the previous book you reviewed here, but the only copy I could find was running the neighborhood of $400. There was a short popular history of the Byzantine scholars who contributed to Renaissance scholars’ understanding of Greek literature titled “Sailing from Byzantium”. I thought was a great read. I may go back and buy it again. But then I also may see if this book is available as well. I think it’ll be a little more affordable. My own Latin Professor was cited in “Sailing from Byzantium”, which really excited him to no end when I told him about it.

Thanks, Daniel, I appreciate that- and congrats to your former prof on the mention! Yes, Brill titles are epensive but you might find it in a library or collection. But, Brepols (the current review) is in a more reasonable price range and covers such a wide variety of specialist subjects that I recommend you (and everyone) to see the full catalog here: https://www.brepols.net/products
