The Bizarre and Comic Story behind My Meeting with Thirst
When global pandemics amplify the imaginary conflagrations of a notorious fabulist
Two days ago, while presenting the key resources for understanding Flann O’Brien as a thespian, I wrote:
“Thirst is a bizarre and comic play and there is indeed a bizarre and comic story about when and under what circumstances I first encountered it. Yet we will save that for another day”
Well, that day has come. I reward my cherished paid subscribers with a behind-the-scenes true tale of how I first encountered this strange work, and why I am still investigating it now. The only thing we will do without for today is photos. I hope that is fine with you.
When I Met Flann
First, I must say that Flann O’Brien first came to my attention, by accident, in the summer of 1997 while living in Ireland. There was a copy of The Third Policeman lying about the place where I was living at the time. That is a story in itself, but suffice to say that strange and ominously humorous volume had quite an effect on me at the time.
