An Excerpt from My Future ‘Detective Grigoris’ Novel
Visit this new Detective Grigoris Section for all future updates
Dear readers,
I hope you’ll enjoy the below excerpt, from a crucial moment in Chapter 2 of my upcoming detective novel, I finished the first draft on 26 January, and I’m now editing Chapter 3 (of nine chapters in total). Editing is much slower than writing, but I expect to finish the revised draft by early March, and hunt for a publisher.
This is a very unusual book for the genre, combining philosophy, travel, geopolitics and modern history. Writing it has surprised me and overjoyed me often. It’s been a great journey of research and writing since fall 2021, and I intend to find a good publishing home for it in 2024. Now that the first draft is done, more updates will come in the weeks and months ahead.
A huge thanks to all those who’ve supported me by reading parts of the text, sharing ideas and checking obscure historical/factual matter pertaining to the storyline and setting—and of course, a huge thanks to my paid subscribers for helping me power through with this little newsletter over the past year. I could not have kept so busy without you.
Although occupied now with revisions, I pledge to make 2024 on Substack even more worthwhile for subscribers (both paid and free), and will share news about additions and structural changes, just as soon as I can.
Until then, enjoy the excerpt, and thanks again for the ongoing support, you are all very much appreciated.
-Chris
EXCERPT from Chapter 2 of Novel 1 of the DETECTIVE GRIGORIS series, by Christopher Deliso:
…..
But then the wild boar trotted away, satiated, apparently suspecting no nearby human presence. Grigoris exhaled deeply and then, both exhausted and exhilarated, felt a sudden flash of clarity: the world, he thought, was strange, much more mysterious than anyone would usually predict; and yet it was a good world, a wonderful world, in fact, and one that required more reflection. He felt at once astonished by the world and yet at home in it, and he suddenly wanted to leave this mountain for home, where he might hear songs again… The unwinding tangle of words branched off freely, until Grigoris’ mind was overgrown, and his eyes shut again, and again he fell asleep, waking only well after dawn, when the songbirds were chirping like the trills of elegant piano, and the day was entirely new.

Note: longer-time TLS readers will recall that the very first Detective Grigoris excerpt appeared on 1 August 2023, under the 1st Ephemera section. The first two parts of ‘The Mystery of the Black Whirlpool,’ that story comes from the projected third novel in the six-noel Detective Grigoris series.
I really want the whole book!
